Michail I. Kurzin (1889-1957)



Kurzin was born at Barnaul in the south of West Siberia in 1889.

He got an excellent art education. In 1904-1907 he attended the classes in Kazan' School of Art. In 1907-1911 he continued his studies in Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture. Then he achieved his education in private studios of St. Petersburg.

From 1912 to 1923 he settled in Barnaul, but often returned to St. Petersburg. Besides he made long trips to other places. So in 1919 he spent almost one year in China, where was strongly influenced by art of this country. It is in Barnaul that he was firstly exhibited in 1916. That was his personal exhibition. Some of his works were exhibited in St. Peterbougr then in Moscow and achieved a fame.

He was an eager participant of moving exhibition which was organised by then Minister of Culture Lunacharsky in early 1920th. In 1921 this exhibition was in Barnaul.

Kurzin was a successful portraitist, satirical and historical painter. He was theatrical decorator, muralist, much worked on posters, postcards etc.

1923 he left Barnaul for Central Asia. There he much contributed to an Uzbek modern art.
